****That would be any other player apart from Vic Watson who scored 203 goals for us in the top flight, 23 more than Geoff Hurst

Spot On. I was lucky enough to be around when he was bangin' em in. The intuition (or whatever it was) that he and Peters had was extraordinary: just about invented the near-post scoring art. And let's not forget he often did on a ploughed field without all the professional back-up systems prevalent in the modern game. Never met him, neither know nor care about his personality, just his football talent.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention Sold, just watched it. Enjoyed it although bringing in an American who scored a hat trick in the Women's game was a bit bizarre.. Was aware that Geoff's daughter passed a few years back but didn't know about his brother, so sad. Sad also that there are only three left, but it was a good doc.

I really do wonder what sort of species supposedly support the club.

Some cunt named crassus says of Sir Geoff "he was a far inferior player than he thinks he was". He's talking about the man who has scored far more goals in the top flight for us than any other player.

I literally watched him play in hundreds of games for us and he would walk into any WHU side I've seen since his great days. Nobody has matched him - nobody.

Forget the world cup and all that, he was a WHU legend and a decent bloke. All this slagging every time his name comes up makes me want to puke

Re: Hurst: the First and Only
Just how the money was divided up was recalled by Nobby Stiles, a member of the winning England team: 'We had made a unanimous decision to split our winning bonus equally among the squad, irrespective of who had actually played.

'That great man, the late Bobby Moore, our captain, knew us well enough to take an instant decision. Sir Alf had gathered us all together and said, 'Gentlemen, we have something to discuss. You have been awarded a bonus of £22,000 to be shared between you. One way of doing it would be everyone to have a basic £500, with extra money for appearances.

'Without a moment's hesitation, our captain stood up and said: 'No, boss, it will be £1,000 each. We were in all this together and that's how it will stay'.'

There you go Huffers son... £1k from the FA and £1k for painting three stripes... theres your £2k

Re: Hurst: the First and Only
I ended up feeling sorry for Hurst.

Mooro was the established senior England pro, alongside Charlton. They’d been playing for England since before the 1962 World Cup

Even Peters had played more games for England.

Hurst scoring a world football changing hat trick in the final, some may say we only won it because he scored those goals. Where were Hunt and Charlton on the day? Both more senior than Hurst. Maybe why Hurst didn’t give it thé biggun on the day

What’s been lost is how they were at them at time, relative to each other.

Re: Hurst: the First and Only
He told my mate that the players were all offered 1k to paint white stripes on their boots the night before the final. Apparently a representative from Adidas knocked on their hotel room doors at the Royal Garden with the offer. He said most of the players did it as it was more than their bonus. These older players tend to change their stories quite a bit...shown here if he said they got 2k from the FA in this documentary.

Apparently there is a photo of the team lining up and you can see they all have different thicknesses and slants on the stripes on their boots.

Went to see him the other night in colchester, seems a nice bloke, funny and quite self deprecating, in good shape for nearly 81.

Thanks, Sold I do like a football documentary. Interesting how some players are looked back on. I'm reading all the old West Ham autobiographies I have again, Greenwood's, Lyall's, McAvennie's and I am now reading Cottee's again for the first time in years and I must say reading it again Cottee comes across as a bit of a prima donna. That said it was written when he was still playing so not written with hindsight of experience. It's very clear what a frustrated young man he was, whereas Frank was always happy go lucky.

Huffers… I imagine if I had scored a hattrick in a WCF and then a few years later on I was signing on… and then having to go knock knocking selling life insurance I would be pretty sure I’d have a chip on my shoulder as well…. Lets be honest how the FA and our club have treated our heroes in the past is nothing short of scandalous…. Anyway only thing that he said in the doc regarding dosh is that he earnt more in insurance than he ever did in football… didn’t come across as jealous of todays inferior players … did state that the Germans were given £10k for losing the WCF where as the FA gave the England players £2k for winning it !!

Kaiser… I imagine they got the yank bird on board as she is the only other living person that has scored a trio in a WCF… the other women on there are WHU fans so they probably have as any reason to spout their stuff as Mark Wright, Russell Brand and any other of the celeb fans on there…

Yes, another vote for the Soldo tip machine.

Haven't watched it all yet, just got up to the full time whistle in the WCF

How unusual for Sky to shoehorn women's football in to the documentary?

Well I for one will watch it as foremost I'm a West Ham fan since 1960 and will always remember the 6 goals he got against Sunderland.
As a 16 year old kid the pride of knowing that three of your players played for England will never wain.
Not really interested if he was offish or a bit of a dickhead it's what he done on the pitch that counts.

Crassus 11:12 Mon Nov 14
Re: Hurst: the First and Only
Sir Bobby by contrast was a magnificent ambassador, measured control and time for all, frequently looked a tad disapproving when GH was 'playing up'

Another - Ronnie Boyce, we literally invaded his parent's grocery one day to substantiate the word that he was their son, much sniggering and yes they were, then the man himself emerged with a sack of spuds on his shoulder, cracking bloke and carried on chatting as he stacked the veg

Different times

Crassus 11:05 Mon Nov 14

interesting comments
I guess it validates the adage of never meet your heroes

Goughy used to live up the road from us and one way and another met and saw him numerously, you could not meet a nicer bloke
For a lad as thick as mince I recall a moment of rare insight
'I always try to acknowledge well-wishers with a smile, you may have had the worse day ever but remember, ignore a young fan and they will never forget'
